Meet Our February Family of the Month: The Carls
Mica Carls (11), Stacy Trager-Carls (51), Jason Carls (49)
Stacy’s Journey to Beth Sholom:
Although Stacy wasn’t initially a member, she has been attending Beth Sholom since the 2000s, mostly during the High Holidays. She fondly remembers Rabbi Lew’s teachings and the first time she heard Rabbi Richman’s voice, describing it as a soul-touching experience that felt like a big hug, especially since her family was far away. Growing up in a Conservative Jewish community in Michigan, Stacy loved hearing the familiar melodies during services. Jason grew up in a Reform Jewish community in the Five Towns area of New York.
Simchat Torah stands out as a favorite Beth Sholom event. Stacy vividly recalls the first time the entire Torah was unscrolled, an unforgettable moment for her.
What We Love Most About Beth Sholom:
The warm, welcoming community has made a lasting impression on the Carls family. They appreciate how many people have introduced themselves, making them feel at home. The familiar face of Jonathan Bayer has also been comforting—Mica remembers him from preschool, and he’s a family friend. Jonathan and Jason swim together in the Bay with the South End Rowing Club. Another familiar connection is Adam Lowy; Stacy’s mom and Adam’s mother, Suzanne, have been friends since their teenage years.
Passover is the family’s favorite holiday. They love hosting guests and celebrating together.
Fun Facts About the Carls Family:
Stacy teaches at Balboa High School as a special education transition teacher.
Jason jokes that he’s a “recovering lawyer.”
Mica attends Rooftop K-8, studies Capoeira, and enjoys skiing, swimming, and tennis. She also attended preschool at Noe Valley Chabad, which the family still attends occasionally.
The family lives in the Mission District and loves to travel.
