MAKOR OR

Deepen your Jewish spirituality through meditation, learning, and community.

Founded by Rabbi Alan Lew z’l and Norman Fischer in 1999, Makor Or continues to offer deep Jewish teaching and practice to the Congregation Beth Sholom community and beyond, both in person and on Zoom. Norman and Rabbi Dorothy Richman regularly offer day-long Jewish meditation retreats before holidays and at an annual Shabbaton. When we gather, we sit, walk, chant, learn, and create spiritual community together. Everyone is welcome, no need to have prior experience in meditation or Jewish ritual. Learn more in J. The Jewish News of Northern California’s article What’s the sound of Jews sitting in silence? 25 years of meditation at Makor Or in S.F.

  • Prepare for Passover: Body & Soul

This March, Makor Or will be offering in-depth preparation for Passover. In addition to our classic Sunday day-long Jewish Meditation retreat (March 22, 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Pacific), we will also be offering two Tuesday evenings of learning, practice and discussion on March 10 & 17, from 6:30–8:00 p.m. Pacific. All three programs will be offered in person at Congregation Beth Sholom and on Zoom.

The Tuesday meetings will begin with a sit and include teachings and discussions led by Norman Fischer and R. Dorothy Richman. Each participant will be encouraged to meet with a hevruta, a study partner, once a week, outside of our meetings. Committing to learning and practice in community will deepen your understanding and experience of the Passover holiday. All are encouraged and welcome to join us, regardless of prior experience with Judaism or meditation. Our community continues to be generous and help sponsor those who have a financial hardship to participate. Please reach out to Rabbi Richman at rabbirichman@bethsholomsf.org if you would like to join us and need some financial help.

    Sunday retreat (in-person): $54
Tuesday sessions (in-person): $18 per session or both
All programs on Zoom: $36 flat rate (includes retreat + both Tuesday sessions)
